…. after 23 years of running Leeds, Labour finally realises litter is a major problem
Councillor Mark Harris, Leader of the Opposition Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council, has welcomed proposals to toughen up enforcement measures against littering, fly tipping and dog fouling.
Cllr Harris said "The Council now has a wide range of Staff who can carry out enforcement action against those responsible for many of the petty acts of vandalism which disfigure our city. These include 60 Neighbourhood and Street Wardens, and should in future include Police Community Support Officers, who will be able to issue fixed penalty notices to people who drop litter in the street, amongst other action.
"For those who regularly pass through the City Centre, and local shopping areas around the City, the sight of litter strewn pavements has become a regular occurrence. By tackling the source of the problem, rather than just trying to clear up the mess afterwards, I am hopeful that the Council will be able to provide a better environment. Those who continually drop litter must face the consequence of their actions, if they do not wish to receive fixed penalty fines they should not drop litter in the first place."
