Most of 'Studentland' now has green recycling bins. Only students can make the system work.
Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Over the summer holiday the largest chunk of 'Studentland' has had a green recycling bin delivered to their house. Students have been campaigning for years for better recycling facilities for Leeds 6 - now we have to make the system work."
"I'm sorry and quite angry that the Labour Council hasn't carried out the publicity campaign it promised for the new term on making the new green bins work. At the moment large numbers of houses aren't using them properly, probably through lack of information, so we need to get this sorted out or we might lose the facility."
"You can use your green bin to recycle newspapers and magazines, white office paper, aluminium and tin cans, cardboard and plastic bottles. You CAN'T use it for glass or ordinary rubbish. Recyclables should be put in the bin loose, not bagged, and washed if need be." said Cllr Morton.
"The green bins are collected every two weeks on the same day as your wheelie bins. Each bin should have a sticker on it with collection dates. If there isn't one then ring the helpline - 3951013 - and they will tell you"
"We are pressing the Labour Council to use a company that would allow glass to be put in the bins and to extend the Streetscene initiative to the whole of 'Studentland'. Last year Leeds only recycled 11% of of its household waste, the lowest figure for any city of this size."
"If students use the new bins properly then it will help us improve this abysmal figure"
