Councillor Brian Jennings (Lib Dem, Weetwood), Chair of the Liberal Democrat's Boundaries Working Group, has welcomed the publication of the 'Boundary Committee for England' final recommendations on new boundaries for Leeds City Council Wards.
Cllr Jennings said "It comes as a welcome surprise nowadays when an exercise being carried out by a central government body actually comes in on time, so I'd like to congratulate the Boundary Committee team on their hard work and timing. The Report basically confirms their interim proposals, with two major changes. Firstly we welcome the proposals to change the boundaries in the Beeston, Hunslet, Holbeck and City areas to mirror closely the proposals of the Beeston Forum. We endorsed these proposals, and they will meet many peoples concerns that historic communities would have been split up and ignored by the new wards proposed.
"The second set of major new proposals come in the North East of the City, where the proposed 'Wetherby' and 'Harewood & Bramham' wards have been redrawn. These are major changes which have been produced at the last minute, and we will need to look at them closely before deciding whether we will make any further representations.
"Elsewhere in the City we are glad that the Boundary Committee has accepted our proposals that the communities of Stanningley and Woodhouse will be recognised in Ward names. The proposed Bramley Ward will now be called Bramley & Stanningley; while the proposed Hyde Park Ward will be called Hyde Park & Woodhouse."
