Headingley's Liberal Democrat Councillors have welcomed the news that the "Streetscene" pilot project in the area is to be made permanent from the 1st of August.
Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "At the end of last year the Council said Headingley had "the biggest concentration of negative streetscene indicators in the city". This was Council-speak for saying we were the dirtiest area of the city. I'm glad to say that we've seen real improvements in street cleaning, refuse collection and containment of waste. Having things like refuse and street cleaning as well as graffiti cleaning all in one department has made a real difference. Its not often that Headingley gets good news so we should savour it while it's there."
Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) added "Local Landlords devastate the area with the amount of dumping that goes on, and by cramming 6 or 8 adults into rental properties which generate far more rubbish than in an ordinary area. The provision of Streetscene wheelie-bins for every house has helped contain the waste properly. I'm delighted that in the next few weeks the area will also be getting much needed green bins to help recycling."
Cllr Greg Mullholland ( Lib Dem, Headingley) said "It's taken years of campaigning to get this far, but we don't want to be complacent. The graffiti and flyposter cleaning aspects of the scheme have not worked and won't be offered to the next areas to get the scheme. The Council needs to sort this out. We also need to make sure that new students to the area get information on Streetscene given to them when they arrive in October. We'll be keeping an eye on the ways things go now that the scheme's 'pilot' status is over."
