Headingley has it fair share of problems and landlords cause nearly all of them. However if we want to keep a sustainable community then we need people to buy houses in the area and constant negative publicity won't help.
Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "Headingley probably gets more press than any other area of the city and its always awful. I understand why local campaigning groups do it - if I'm honest I've done it myself. But you have to ask what long term impact it has on people who might want to buy in the area."
"Lots of people would like to sell their house to an owner occupier when they are leaving the area, but struggle to find one. There's a real range of properties in the Leeds 6 area, and some areas still have lots of permanent residents. Unless we are just going to sit back and let landlords finish the area off we need to start encouraging people to see Headingley as a place to buy and live in."
"In the last year we've seen the largely successful Streetscene initiative clean the place up, a new Primary School open, and big increases in policing in Hyde Park. The area will benefit from Supertram, and is close to both Woodhouse Ridge and Moor."
"If potential buyers looked at some of the nicer streets in North Headingley they'd be pleasantly surprised. In the Hyde Park area there are loads of small terraces for sale suitable for single people or first time buyers close to pubs and shops and live music venues."
"I'm sure I'll be criticised for saying this but in the end only new blood will save the area. I hope at the very least to start a debate."
