Liberal Democrats Councillors in Headingley are calling on is calling on the Council to take urgent legal action against a local landlord after residents moved into the Madeleine Joy Home last night in contravention of planning rules.
Councillor Hamilton commented "It has seemed clear for some weeks that the landlord intended to move in residents without the necessary planning permission. We understand that contracts had been signed, internal alterations had been made and nearby residents even reported 30 beds being moved in earlier this week"
"I was told more than two weeks ago by the Council that a decision on possible legal action was imminent. Two weeks later nothing appears to have happened"
Councillor Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Headingley Ward) adds "We have nothing against the students who have signed up to Madeleine Joy. They signed tenancy agreements in good faith and just want somewhere decent to live. Our concern is that this apparent inaction from the Council sends a signal to other landlords that they can flout planning regulations without any comeback. Proper planning control is vital, not just for the well-being of nearby residents, but for the health and safety of would-be tenants."
