Liberal Democrat Councillors in Headingley have reacted with delight to the decision of the Plans Panel (West) at its June 19th meeting to refuse to remove car parking spaces for customers at the 'Box' pub on Otley Road, Headingley.
Cllr David Morton (Lib Dem, Headingley) member of Plans Panel (West) said "This is great news. Residents lives are being blighted by the huge number of cars coming into Headingley on an evening. The provision of customer car parking at the 'Box' was imposed by the planning inspector who gave permission for the 'Box' to be built several years ago. Since then, if anything, the parking situation has got much worse."
Cllr Martin Hamilton (Lib Dem, Headingley) said "The problem is that few people know the 'Box' has car parking for customers behind the premises in the White Rose House car park. Other pubs in Headingley find their car parking very popular. I think the fact that the 'Box' makes no attempt to advertise the facility means that its little used. This is an argument for advertising the facility, not getting rid of it."
Cllr Greg Mulholland (also Lib Dem, Headingley) added. "residents of near by streets shouldn't suffer because a big developer wants to make even more money from renting these spaces out to a commercial firm. I'd encourage anyone using the 'Box' who needs car parking to ask the staff where it is. If there is an appeal against this decision then we'll be fighting the case very vigorously."
