Councillors Alan Taylor and Andrew Tear, (Lib Dem, Harehills) have welcomed the proposals for a local Health Centre in Gipton.
Cllr Taylor said, "Although still in the early stages of discussion, I feel this is a wonderful idea. It is a pity it has taken so long to get this far, but hopefully it will not take as long for a suitable site to be found and the works completed".
Cllr Tear added, "Gipton has needed such a facility for many years. The closure of the doctor's surgery has meant it has been too far to travel for many patients, especially the elderly. A new health centre in the heart of Gipton would be greatly welcomed by many people in the local community".
The proposal is to be discussed at the Scrutiny Board (Health) meeting on Monday 10th March. As part of the Local Neighbourhood Renewal plans, the aim is to create a sustainable "heart" to Gipton. East Leeds PCT have confirmed their wish to develop an extended primary care centre for Gipton, providing a range of general medical services and community services, together with some council services and a community café.
