Cllr Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Weetwood) has criticised the Council's plan to bump up charges at many of its car parks by well above inflation.
Cllr Golton said " These increases include a 100% rise at Beckett Street Car Park, used by visitors to St James' Hospital and a 25% increase in 'on street' parking charges in the outer city centre area. Once again we see the Council making a decision without fully considering the impact that it might have on the most vulnerable members of the population."
"I really wouldn't mind if we were being asked to pay extra to park in return for improvements to public transport around Leeds. The trouble is that in most places bus services are as bad as they ever were. It's estimated that the price-hikes will bring an extra £725,000 to the City's coffers, but I see no sign of a corresponding increase in the standard of service provided by either the Highways Department or West Yorkshire Metro."
"I'm appalled that the Council feels it has the right to increase prices by so much above inflation without justification. There's no sense in making it more expensive to park in Leeds if you don't match this by providing decent, safe alternatives to private cars."
