The Liberal Democrats are the only main political party to stand up and oppose Bush and Blair's war with Iraq
Leading Leeds Liberal Democrats are part of a large contingent of Liberal Democrats from Leeds who will be taking part in the Stop the War March in London.
Greg Mulholland, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Leeds North West, Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader Cllr Mark Harris and Vice Chair of Yorkshire and Humber Liberal Democrats, Cllr Richard Harker are travelling to London at the weekend to join Charles Kennedy and Liberal Democrats from across the country to emphasise the party's opposition to unilateral action by Britain and the US.
As Greg Mulholland commented, "We are speaking up for the majority of people nationally and here in Leeds who are telling Tony Blair to think again" and adds "As Liberal Democrats we have an obligation to stand up and be counted when our government is taking us into a war a majority of the people of the country disagree with. It is deeply worrying that the two leading liberal democracies in the world are prepared to go to war despite that fact the majority of the British and American people don't approve of a war without a UN mandate ".
The Liberal Democrats believe that the UN weapons inspectors must get the time and space they need to complete their investigations into Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capability and that military action in Iraq must be a last resort, and in any event should be based on the evidence presented by the weapons inspectors; taken with a mandate from the UN Security Council; and subject to a substantive vote in the House of Commons before British troops are committed to any such action.
As Greg Mulholland commented, I am proud that the Liberal Democrats are the only main political party to stand up and oppose Bush and Blair's war with Iraq and we will continue to campaign against it across the country and here in Leeds".
